Protect Yourself: A SAIL Anti-Scam Workshop Series
Join your fellow SAILers to learn how to protect yourself from scams and other security threats. All sessions will be held at Shepherdstown Public Library, from 2:00-3:30 PM on the dates listed below. Bring your own beverage; refreshments will be provided.
Session 1: Monday, October 20, 2025 – Scam and Fraud Prevention for Seniors
Scams targeting senior citizens is a rapidly growing phenomenon, with fraudsters often exploiting the trust and vulnerabilities of older adults to steal their financial and personal information. This session will provide an overview of common elder scams - from traditional door-to-door peddlers to sophisticated online “phishing” expeditions. The ongoing emergence of AI into the digital world only promises to enhance the scope and believability of these attacks. SAIL member Kent Shaffer, a retired forensic scientist who worked in law enforcement venues, will present examples of common elder scams and the best practices for preventing them.
Session 2: Thursday, November 13, 2025 – The Aging Brain and Financial Exploitation
This program will explore some of the changes we experience as we age, as well as some attitudes of older adults that may make us even more vulnerable to a scam or a financial fraud. It will then offer some actions we can take to protect ourselves, or our friends and family members. This presentation will be made by Jane Marks, President WV AARP.
Session 3: Tuesday, January 6, 2026
Session 4: Tuesday, February 13, 2026
